Phenotypes associated with female X chromosome aneuploidy in UK Biobank: an unselected, adult, population-based cohort
نویسندگان
چکیده
Women with X chromosome aneuploidy such as 45,X (Turner syndrome) or 47,XXX (Triple X syndrome) present with a range of characteristics including differences in stature, an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and premature ovarian insufficiency. Many women with X chromosome aneuploidy undergo lifetime clinical monitoring for possible complications. However, biased ascertainment of cases may mean that the penetrance of phenotypes is overestimated. We aimed to characterise the prevalence and phenotypic consequences of X chromosome aneuploidy in a large population of older adults. We detected 30 women with 45,X, 186 with mosaic 45,X/46,XX and 110 with 47,XXX in 245,203 women from UK Biobank, using SNP array data. The phenotypic features of women with full aneuploidy (whether 45,X or 47,XXX) were similar to those previously reported. Consistent with the recognised Turner syndrome phenotype, those with 45,X were 17.2cm shorter than controls and 53% did not go through menarche. Similarly, the phenotype of women with 47,XXX included increased height (on average 5.3cm taller than controls, P = 1 . CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0 International license not peer-reviewed) is the author/funder. Comparison of Sociodemographic and Health-Related Characteristics of UK Biobank Participants With Those of the General Population
The UK Biobank cohort is a population-based cohort of 500,000 participants recruited in the United Kingdom (UK) between 2006 and 2010. Approximately 9.2 million individuals aged 40-69 years who lived within 25 miles (40 km) of one of 22 assessment centers in England, Wales, and Scotland were invited to enter the cohort, and 5.5% participated in the baseline assessment. The representativeness of...
متن کاملExplaining the high mutation rates of cancer cells to drug and multidrug resistance by chromosome reassortments that are catalyzed by aneuploidy.
The mutation rates of cancer cells to drug and multidrug resistance are paradoxically high, i.e., 10(-3) to 10(-6), compared with those altering phenotypes of recessive genes in normal diploid cells of about 10(-12). Here the hypothesis was investigated that these mutations are due to chromosome reassortments that are catalyzed by aneuploidy. Aneuploidy, an abnormal number of chromosomes, is th...
متن کاملX Chromosome Inactivation in Opioid Addicted Women
Introduction: X chromosome inactivation (XCI) is a process during which one of the two X chromosomes in female human is silenced leading to equal gene expression with males who have only one X chromosome. Here we have investigated XCI ratio in females with opioid addiction to see whether XCI skewness in women could be a risk factor for opioid addiction. Methods: 30 adult females meeting DS...
متن کاملThe Significance of Biobanking in the Sustainability of Biomedical Research: A Review
Biobank, defined as a functional unit for facilitating and improving research by storing biospecimen and their accompanying data, is a key resource for advancement in life science. The history of biobanking goes back to the time of archiving pathology samples. Nowadays, biobanks have considerably improved and are classified into two categories: diseased-oriented and population-based biobanks. U...

Background: Preimplantation genetic aneuploidy screening (PGS) has been performed during the last decade as a way of enhancing embryo selection in patients with an increased incidence of embryonic numerical chromosome abnormalities (advanced maternal age, recurrent miscarriage, and recurrent implantation failure). It has been proposed that the replacement of euploid embryos in these patients wo...
